Dot NAME Domains

Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level extension is the only one supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are popular by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to register john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level domains remained active.
